Many authors have used different words for this: “sentience,” “self-awareness,” “sapience,” etc.

This is because humanlike thought and related phenomena are a subject of philosophy, and are impossible to collectively define without resting on assumptions that come from the author’s [[Wikipedia:worldview|worldview]]—whether the author is aware of those assumptions or not. Any definition is therefore guaranteed to be plagued with problems and limitations, and fail to please everyone.

As humans we know that, whether by kind or degree, there is ''something'' that sets apart our cognition, moral agency, etc. from that of all other life on earth, but we don’t know (or can’t agree) ''what that something is.'' And whatever it is, in real life there’s no evidence that any other natural creature has ever shared it, either on earth [[Wikipedia:Fermi paradox|or elsewhere]].

If we see humanlike features on a cartoon animal (e.g. opposable thumbs, front-facing [[Wikipedia:Binocular vision|binocular vision]], upright [[Wikipedia:Bipedalism|bipedalism]], etc.) we readily describe this as a case of entertainment-driven [[Wikipedia:Anthropomorphism|anthropomorphism]]: the act of portraying a non-human creature or object with human features. Our capacity for rational thought is ''even more unique'' than any of those traits, so why should we treat it with less ownership? So far as we know, it’s as exclusive to us as if it were an identifying “fingerprint” of humanness.

Furthermore when we [[Wikipedia:Extraterrestrials in fiction|imagine it in extraterrestrials]], our own experience of rational thought is the only source to draw from. Therefore, at heart this cannot be anything other than a projection of ourselves—just like when we imagine a cartoon animal that walks upright and talks. On the scale of world history, imagining such a thing ''at all'' is sort of a modern development. In any case, it's a process clearly fraught with ''anthropomorphic bias.''

Many assume that our apparent uniqueness is a mere illusion born from lack of data, i.e. that we simply don’t know what aliens are like because we haven’t encountered them ''yet,'' but may at some time in the future. Some carry this expectancy to an almost absurd level of imminence, unfazed by the continual seep of disappointment they induce. If they ever get their wish, this would be an ideological cataclysm that would certainly justify updating the contents of this article.

Until then, many try to compensate for our anthropomorphic bias by imagining aliens as increasingly foreign and inhuman. They end up picturing [[Wikipedia:Lovecraftian horror|Lovecraftian]] grotesquery, or godlike [[Wikipedia:Kardashev scale|Kardashev]] beings, all of which in the end ring hollow and shallow against the creative oasis of anthropomorphism.

So we find that anthropomorphic bias is something to neither blunder past, nor fight against. Instead, we choose to acknowledge it here in this ''out-of-story'' way, and we accept the role of extraterrestrials in science fiction (including [[:Category:Intelligent species|the ones in Eithalica]]) as mere entertainment devices that fundamentally cannot provide a satisfying treatment of the subject.

All the bodies in Eithalica have nearly the same physical characteristics, which (when considered per-body) are essentially [[Wikipedia:Earth analog|earth-like]]: mass, mean radius, mean density, surface gravity, general composition, climate, etc. They even have comparable types of global ecosystems and share some [[:Category:Environment|flora and fauna]]. This approximate homogeneity is one of the [[#Para-Natural Traits|para-natural traits]] of the system and gives rise to its [[#Celestial Classification|classification trouble]].

On top of these similarities, the orbital configurations of Eithalica are striking in at least four ways:
* All three “moons” orbit extremely close to Eith (and each other) with very short periods.
* All orbits are [[Wikipedia:Geostationary orbit|geostationary]] to Eith, a condition kept stable by [[Wikipedia:Tidal acceleration|tidal forces]].

= Description =

All the bodies in Eithalica have nearly the same physical characteristics, which (when considered per-body) are essentially [[Wikipedia:Earth analog|earth-like]]: mass, mean radius, mean density, surface gravity, general composition, climate, etc. They even have comparable types of global ecosystems and share some [[:Category:Environment|flora and fauna]]. This approximate homogeneity is one of the [[#Para-Natural Traits|para-natural traits]] of the system and gives rise to its [[#Celestial Classification|classification trouble]].

On top of these similarities, the orbital configurations of Eithalica are striking in at least four ways:
* All three “moons” orbit extremely close to Eith (and each other) with very short periods.
* All orbits are [[Wikipedia:Geostationary orbit|geostationary]] to Eith, a condition kept stable by [[Wikipedia:Tidal acceleration|tidal forces]].
* All bodies are [[Wikipedia:Tidal locking|tidally locked]] to each other.
* The system is radially symmetrical, another [[#Para-Natural Traits|para-natural trait]].

Due to these characteristics, all the moons have [[Wikipedia:Roche limit|Roche limits]] that are even closer to Eith’s surface than the moons are themselves. This means that, although they are so [[Wikipedia:prolate|prolate]] that it's obvious to the naked eye, each moon is still internally stable. In fact, the lack of variability in prolateness means no added stress from [[Wikipedia:Tidal heating|tidal flexing]] (and therefore no extra [[Wikipedia:volcanism|volcanism]]).

As a result of the system-wide tidal locking and geostationary orbits, Eithalica appears almost like one contiguous, rigid mass—as though its members are all fixed to each other by invisible arms. Eithalica is a unique system that resists conventional classification.

A casual observer might see that [[Eith]] (the central planet) sits permanently in the center of all the “lunar” orbits, and suppose this means Eith is the host for those orbits. But this is a deceptive consequence of [[#Para-Natural Traits|the system’s overall symmetry]]. In reality, the gravity from Eith plays a smaller role in defining each moon’s orbit than does the combined gravity from the other two moons. So the system is truly mutual like a [[Wikipedia:Star system#Higher multiplicities|quadruple star]], but of [[Wikipedia:planet|planets]]. Hence it receives the term '''“quadruple planet.”'''

In this wiki and other real-life English works, the outer bodies of Eithalica are still called “moons” in a virtual sense, and for simplicity. However, a [[Wikipedia:moons|moon]] is defined as a naturally occurring [[Wikipedia:satellite (disambiguation)|satellite]], i.e. a body which [[Wikipedia:orbit|orbits]] another. To say that one body orbits the other, and not ''vice versa,'' is to presume a hierarchy between the two which in the case of Eithalica and each of its moons is very tenuous.

Theoretically all bodies in a system exert at least some [[Wikipedia:gravity|gravitational force]] on all other bodies in the system, but for most planets the masses involved are defined by a hierarchy so enormous that it’s unmistakable and indisputable. Often the influence of the smaller bodies on the larger is negligible.

When there is dispute, usually in real life (so far) it’s over possible [[Wikipedia:Dwarf planet|dwarf planets]]. Every one of Eithalica’s bodies is too large to be remotely considered “dwarf-size,” yet it still exists at an utmost edge of these definitions—a new, somewhat different edge.

“Para-natural” is a novel term used in this wiki to describe certain traits of Eithalica that, while currently adhering to known physics, defy typical expectations for celestial objects with respect to their ''origin'' and ''formation process.''

Eithalica’s para-natural traits are:

* its radial symmetry, and
* general similarities in (or exact recurrences of) flora and fauna, among bodies in Eithalica as well as [[Wikipedia:Earth|real-life Earth]].
